Sage Green and White Shaker Kitchen in Dublin
Dublin

Project Overview
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Project Type: Residential Kitchen Renovation
Kitchen Door Style: Modern Shaker
Cabinetry Range: Melrose Matt Vinyl
The Challenge
The homeowner wanted to update a kitchen that was starting to feel tired and less useful for everyday family life. There was not enough clear worktop space for food preparation, smaller items often ended up sitting out on the surfaces, and the room did not have one strong central area for cooking, washing up, and day-to-day use.
The brief was not to create a plain white kitchen. The homeowner wanted something brighter and calmer, but with more warmth and character than an all-neutral scheme. Storage also needed to work harder, especially for cookware, small appliances, and the items used most often during the week. The goal was to create a more comfortable family kitchen with better preparation space and a clearer layout.
The island was an important part of the brief. It needed to do more than look good in the middle of the room. The aim was to make it a useful working part of the kitchen, with the sink, preparation space, and extra storage all brought together in one place.
Before & After
Before the renovation, the kitchen felt tired, with limited clear worktop space and storage that needed to work harder. After the renovation, it feels brighter and more organised, with white shaker cabinetry, a sage green island, and a more useful family layout.

The Design Solution
We kept the colour palette soft, but not flat. White shaker cabinetry was used across the main kitchen runs to keep the room bright and easy to live with, while the sage green kitchen island was added as the main feature. Keeping the green to the island made the colour feel intentional without taking over the whole room.
The Melrose Matt Vinyl doors were chosen for the main cabinetry because they suit a modern shaker kitchen in Dublin without feeling too traditional. The matt finish also gives the cupboards a softer look than gloss, which worked well with the warmer island colour and brass details.
The sink was placed on the island so the homeowner could use this area for preparation and clean-up, instead of spreading those tasks across several parts of the kitchen. This made the island feel like part of the daily routine, not just a decorative feature — an important detail in shaker kitchens designed for busy family use.

Layout & Storage Improvements
The island made the biggest difference to how the kitchen works. It gave the homeowner a proper place for preparation and washing up, while also freeing up the surrounding worktops for cooking, serving, and smaller daily tasks.
Storage was planned around the items the family needed close to hand. The island added extra storage near the sink and prep area, while the base units and full-height cupboards helped keep larger items and everyday kitchenware better organised. This made the room feel tidier without adding bulky cabinetry everywhere.
The final layout is simple, but that is what makes it work. The oven, sink, and preparation areas are easy to move between, and the island gives the room a useful centre point. For a busy family kitchen, this kind of practical kitchen layout makes a noticeable difference.
Materials & Finishes
The main cabinetry uses Melrose Matt Vinyl shaker doors. This was a good fit for a family kitchen because the finish is smooth, durable, and easy to clean, while still giving the room a softer painted look.
The sage green island adds the character the homeowner wanted without making the kitchen feel dark. Paired with the white cabinetry, it gives the room a warmer, more personal feel than a standard all-white design.
For the surfaces, white marble-effect laminate kitchen worktops were chosen to keep the kitchen bright and easy to maintain. They give the look of a lighter stone-style surface, while staying practical for regular cooking, cleaning, and family use.
The Cesaro 1.0 Bowl Undermount Ceramic Sink keeps the island area neat and simple. Its undermount design sits cleanly within the worktop, which helps the sink area feel more integrated into the rest of the kitchen.

The Result
The finished kitchen feels brighter, calmer, and easier to use. The island now works as the main prep and washing-up area, while the surrounding units help keep the worktops clearer.
The white shaker cabinets keep the room fresh and open, and the sage green island adds the warmth and character the homeowner wanted. It feels more personal than a plain white kitchen, without making the space look busy.
This shaker kitchen is a good example of how the right layout, easy-maintenance finishes, and a well-planned island can make a family kitchen work better day to day.

Kitchen Renovation FAQ
What made the island important in this kitchen renovation?
The island became the main working area in the kitchen. It gives the homeowner a place for preparation and washing up, while also adding extra storage close to where it is needed most. This helped make the kitchen easier to use without making the room feel crowded.
Why was the sink placed on the kitchen island?
Placing the sink on the island created a more useful prep and clean-up zone. It means the homeowner can wash, prepare, and clear items in one central area, while the surrounding worktops stay freer for cooking and serving.
What are the benefits of laminate kitchen worktops?
Laminate kitchen worktops are a good choice when you want a bright, clean finish that is simple to look after. In this project, the white marble-effect laminate helped keep the kitchen light while offering a practical surface for regular cooking, cleaning, and family use.
