This fitted kitchen is a great example of how a small footprint can still deliver a clean, timeless look and a surprising amount of storage. The client wanted a bright Shaker style that felt classic, but also needed the space to work harder day to day—more organisation, clearer work zones, and less countertop clutter.
Shaker Style with a Soft, Modern Palette

We built the scheme around the Monroe Painted Door in Mussel, a warm greige that sits beautifully between beige and grey. It’s neutral enough to keep the room feeling light, but adds more depth than plain white. The Shaker door profile gives subtle frame detailing, and the painted finish has a refined, slightly textured look that feels premium without being fussy—ideal for a fitted kitchen where you want timeless appeal.
To balance the cabinetry, we paired it with a Quartz countertop. The light quartz surface reflects daylight and keeps the kitchen feeling open, which is especially important in compact spaces. Inside the units, the Robson Oak interior adds warmth and contrast—those small details make the kitchen feel more bespoke when you open drawers and doors.
U-Shaped Kitchen Layout for Maximum Use of Space
For the layout, we chose a U-shaped kitchen, one of the most efficient options for smaller rooms. It creates continuous worktop runs on three sides, meaning more prep space and more cabinetry without needing a larger room.

- Sink under the window: keeps the main daily task area bright and pleasant.
- Hob on the main run: positioned with clear landing space on both sides for safer, easier cooking.
- Short travel distances: everything stays within reach, so the kitchen feels efficient rather than cramped.
This U-shape also helps define the kitchen zone clearly, making it feel structured and tidy—especially when the rest of the home is busy.
Storage Upgrades: Making a Small Kitchen Hold More
The key objective was improving storage, so we treated every gap as an opportunity:
- Tall housing for built-in appliances: a full-height unit neatly integrates the oven/microwave stack, freeing up base-unit space for cookware storage.
- Bridge cabinet above the fridge: uses “dead space” overhead and creates a built-in, fitted look.
- Slim pull-out storage beside the fridge: a narrow vertical rack (perfect for oils, spices, bottles, or trays) turns an awkward strip into high-value storage.
- Deep drawers in the base units: drawers are more practical than shelves for pans, plates, and heavier items—everything is visible and easy to access.
- Corner storage kept functional: the U-shape naturally creates corners, so we ensured the corner base unit remains usable, not wasted.
The result is a kitchen that stays visually calm because so much is stored away properly—less on the counters, more behind doors.
A Clean, Everyday-Friendly Finish
With Monroe Mussel Shaker doors, a durable quartz worktop, and warm Robson Oak interiors, this fitted kitchen feels classic, bright, and easy to live with. Most importantly, the U-shaped plan and smart storage details make the space work like a larger kitchen—without needing more square metres.
If you’re looking for a fitted Shaker kitchen, a U-shaped kitchen layout, or ideas to increase storage in a small kitchen, this project is a strong real-home reference.
