Eimear’s Denim Shaker U-Shaped Kitchen in Clondalkin, Dublin
Eimear’s kitchen in Clondalkin did not need a new layout. The U-shape worked, the cabinets were solid and the worktops were in good condition. What had dated were the oak-effect doors.
So this became a replacement kitchen door project in Clondalkin rather than a full renovation. Kitchens4U fitted Melrose Denim matt vinyl shaker doors, new drawer fronts and plinths, and Pisa ‘D’ handles, and kept everything else in place. The work took two to three days on site, with a budget of €5,000–€7,000.

The Starting Point
This is a compact U-shaped kitchen: the sink under the window, a freestanding cooker on the left, and base units and drawers running along the right-hand wall, with a row of wall cupboards above.
The oak-effect shaker doors were the main thing holding the room back. Against the dark worktop and pale tiles they looked warm and heavy, and the mix of oak and black made a small room feel busier than it is. The cabinets behind them, though, were still in good order.
That is the situation where replacing the whole kitchen makes little sense. Taking out sound cabinets and a good worktop would add cost and days of disruption for very little gain.
Before & After
Before, the room was oak-effect from end to end, with the cupboards and drawers in the same honey tone. After, the same units carry Denim blue-grey shaker doors with silver handles. The worktop, sink, cooker, floor and tiles have not moved, yet the kitchen looks newer and calmer.

What Changed
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Oak-effect shaker doors on base and wall units | Melrose Denim matt vinyl shaker doors |
| Oak-effect drawer fronts | Denim drawer fronts to match |
| Original plinths | New plinths in the same Denim finish |
| Older silver bow handles | Pisa ‘D’ Handle Chunky throughout, vertical on doors and horizontal on drawers |
| Dark speckled worktop, pale wall tiles, sink, cooker, layout | Kept as they were |
Why Replacement Doors Made Sense Here
The decision came down to what was worth keeping. The U-shaped layout already put the sink, cooker and preparation space within a step or two of each other. The worktop was in good condition. The cabinets were sound. The only part that made the kitchen look old was the part you see first: the doors.
Keeping the layout also meant no plumbing or electrical work, no new worktop to template and no tiling to redo. That is why the job fitted into two to three days and a budget of €5,000–€7,000, rather than the weeks and the budget of a full renovation.

Why Denim Works Here
The colour had to work with two things that were not changing: a near-black speckled worktop and pale, light grey wall tiles. Denim is a mid-tone blue-grey, so it sits between the two. It is lighter than the worktop, which keeps the base units from merging into one dark block, and stronger than the tiles, so the cabinets still read as the main feature.
The shaker profile was also kept on purpose. The old doors were shaker style too, so the room keeps the same framed look; only the colour and finish moved on.

The U-Shaped Layout
The layout stayed exactly as it was. The sink is under the window, the freestanding cooker is on the left-hand side, and the right-hand side has a corner unit, a three-drawer stack and double-door base cupboards, with wall cupboards running above.
In a small U-shaped kitchen, the gap between the two sides matters more than in any other layout. Because no units were added or moved, that walkway stayed exactly the same width, and the person cooking can still turn from cooker to sink to worktop without taking more than a step.
Materials & Finishes
Melrose Denim matt vinyl doors
The doors are Melrose kitchen doors in Denim. They are vinyl wrapped, so the shaker frame and centre panel are formed in one piece, with a matt finish that wipes clean easily. The backs of the doors are in the same colour, so the kitchen looks finished even with a cupboard open.
Pisa ‘D’ handles
Every door and drawer has a Pisa ‘D’ Handle Chunky. The handle is a curved bow with a solid feel, which suits a shaker door better than a thin bar. They are fitted vertically on doors and horizontally on drawers.

What stayed
The dark speckled worktop, the stainless steel sink and drainer, the freestanding cooker and the fridge all stayed. So did the pale wall tiles, including the vertical textured feature tile on the right-hand wall, which now stands out more against the blue-grey cupboards. Inside the cabinets, the original oak-effect carcasses and shelves were kept.

Installation
The work took two to three days. With the cabinets, worktop and services staying put, a door replacement is mostly measuring, hanging and adjusting: fitting each door and drawer front, lining up the gaps, fixing the plinths and setting the handles at a consistent height.
Is a Door Replacement Right for Your Kitchen?
Check the cabinets first
New doors only make sense on cabinets that are solid, square and dry. If the carcasses are swollen near the sink or sagging under the worktop, new doors will not hide it for long.
Decide what you are keeping, then pick the colour
The worktop, tiles and floor will stay, so the new door colour has to work with them. In this kitchen, Denim works because it sits between a dark worktop and pale tiles.
Do the drawers and plinths too
New doors next to old drawer fronts or old plinths look patched. Replacing all the visible fronts together is what makes the kitchen look new rather than repaired.
The Result
Eimear’s kitchen in Clondalkin has the same layout, worktop and appliances it had before, but it no longer looks like the same kitchen. The Denim shaker doors cool down the warm oak tone, the silver handles tie the three sides together, and the original feature tiles now have something to stand against.
For a kitchen with a layout that works and cabinets in good condition, replacement doors are often the most sensible place to spend the money.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to replace kitchen doors in Dublin?
This Clondalkin project came in at €5,000 to €7,000 for new doors, drawer fronts, plinths and handles across a U-shaped kitchen. The cost of your own project depends on how many doors and drawers you have, the door range and whether you also change worktops or other parts.
How long does a kitchen door replacement take?
This one took two to three days on site. Because the cabinets, worktops, sink and appliances stayed in place, there was no strip-out, no worktop templating and no plumbing or electrical work.
Can new doors be fitted to my existing kitchen cabinets?
Usually, as long as the cabinets are solid and square. In this kitchen the original carcasses were kept and only the doors, drawer fronts, plinths and handles were replaced. Every door and drawer is measured first, because older kitchens are not always built to today’s standard sizes.
Do I need new worktops if I replace my kitchen doors?
Not if the existing worktops are in good condition and the colour works with the new doors. Here the dark speckled worktop was kept, and it sits well against the Denim blue-grey doors.
What is a vinyl-wrapped shaker door?
It is a door with a vinyl (PVC) film wrapped over a shaped core, giving a shaker-style frame and centre panel in one piece. The Melrose Denim doors in this kitchen have a matt vinyl finish, which wipes clean easily and costs less than painted timber.
